thoughtsPaul Graham posted one new assay: Is there such a thing as good taste.
As title stated, the essay discusses if there is a thing we usually called as good taste, or more deeply, Paul is argueing about beauty. Is it totally objective or can be somewhat subjective. Paul thinks there is a good taste, otherwise nothing is beautiful or good at all. He used a technique which often used in math:reverse deduction.
But there is one thing wrong in Paul's deduction, he got to a point where a child's drawing is not different from Leonardo's painting which he then stated that this is obviously false base on common sense. But here, the common sense is opposite of what he was trying to deduct. You are obvious wrong when you are using something against your hypothesis to prove your hypothesis is wrong. A logical error in the deduction.
I actually thoght about this and has a post on 'what is beauty'. I came to a conclusion which can be seen as extreme, but there is definitely something wrong with today's common sense of beauty.
